His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for a renewed collective commitment to address instability in the West African region, stating that the dangers of terrorism and extremism affect all countries and require a different approach.
Speaking at the High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security in Accra, President Mahama condemned the attack on Niger and urged the countries to strengthen their existing framework and coordination, noting that threats do not respect borders.
The conference, which brought together Heads of State, Ministers, Ambassadors, and Intelligence Chiefs from West Africa, aims to rebuild and deepen sub-regional collaboration to enhance resilience, restore confidence, and address structural issues promoting instability.
He highlighted the importance of good healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development in facilitating peace and rebuilding trust.
The President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio, thanked President Mahama for organizing the conference, noting that terrorism thrives where social contracts are broken, poverty, and mistrust exist. He called for intensified intelligence and collaboration to address insecurity in the region.
