Migration Unit (MU)

The Unit coordinates the national activities in the area of migration and at the same time help in the development of a coherent migration Policy framework for the country. The issue of migration is currently considered a very important and fundamental element in the global development agenda. In November, 2004 Ghana hosted an international conference on Migration and Development under the auspices of the United Nations. Regional hearings were held in various parts of the world leading to a report by the Global Coalition on International Migration on the nexus between migration and development. Ghana, as an active partner in the global discussion on migration, was admitted as a member of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in November, 2005. IOM is the global body with the main objective of managing migration and assisting member states also to develop such capacities. The Migration Unit was as a result established at the Ministry of the Interior in July, 2008 with technical support and equipment from IOM. General Administration Directorate (GAD)

This Directorate ensures that approved personnel policies in the Ministry on employment, personnel records, training, and wages and salaries administration are translated into good management practices and effectively carried out. This Directorate further ensures that services and facilities necessary to support the administrative and other functions of the Ministry are available.  It also ensures the provision of an effective and efficient system for internal checks. Gaming Commission of Ghana

The Gaming Commission of Ghana is an Agency under the Ministry of the Interior with continuous progression and a common seal, which was established under the Gaming Act 2006, (Act 721). The Act legalizes all forms of Games of Chance in Ghana except Lottery. The Act empowers the Commission, in the discharge of its functions to acquire and hold any movable or immovable property and enter into contracts or other transactions. The gaming industry in Ghana was previously regulated under the Lotteries and Betting Act, 1960 (Act31), the Football Pools Authority Act 1961, (Act 78) the Gambling Machines Decree 1973 (NRCD 174) and Casino Licensing Decree 1975 (NRCD 320).Until the establishment of the Gaming Commission, the Ministry of the Interior had oversight responsibility for the regulation of Casinos and other games of chance. The Gaming Act further states that ,where there is hindrance to the acquisition of property, the property may be acquired for the Commission under the State Property and Contracts Act, 1960 (C.A.6) or the State Lands Act, 1962 (Act 125) and the costs shall be borne by the Commission. The Ghana Prisons Service, as an agent operating under the ambit of the Ministry of the Interior, contributes to the maintenance of public safety by ensuring the safe custody of criminals convicted by the courts to terms of imprisonment. Legal Mandate The statutes that currently govern the Service are: The 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. Prisons Service Decree 1972, NRCD 46. Prisons Standing Orders, 1960. IOM SUPPORTS GHANA POLICE SERVICE

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Ghana Police Service has received six vehicles and office equipment worth 185,000 dollars from the International Organisation on Migration (IOM) in Accra. The presentation was to support the unit in its rescuing operations in the Volta, Central and Greater Accra regions. The Chief of Missions of IOM, Mrs. Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, making the presentation yesterday said from 2012, the IOM had collaborated with the Police to rescue 750 children from human traffickers.
