Ghana’s National Identification Authority marks two decades of operation, with the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, declaring the Ghana Card a gateway to finance, healthcare, telecommunications, and public services for citizens.
Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Launch in Accra on the theme “Reflecting on the Past, Securing the Future”, the Minister stated that the NIA had grown from a “conceptual initiative” in 2006 into a “resilient and sophisticated biometric identity ecosystem” that now underpins national security and economic participation.
“When we began this journey, the road was fraught with uncertainty, resources were limited, and expectations were high. Yet through determination and foresight, a solid foundation was laid. Today, the Ghana Card transcends its role as a mere identification document,’ he stated.
He stressed three priorities going forward: achieving universal coverage so no Ghanaian is left behind; safeguarding system integrity and data security; and continuing to innovate so identity becomes a seamless and accessible public good.
Hon. Muntaka assured the Authority of Government’s unwavering support and urged staff and partners to sustain this momentum, pursue excellence, and boldly explore new frontiers in identity management across the sub-region. ‘Building a national identity system is an ongoing journey, one that must evolve alongside our people, our economy, and our national aspirations,” the Minister added.
Also speaking at the launch, the Executive Secretary of NIA, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, reflected on the journey from its early stages to its current role as a key part of Ghana’s governance and economic systems, including the continued use of technology to drive upgrades and improve operations.
Mr. Deku emphasised that the Ghana card is intended to function as a practical identity tool for all services reinforcing its role as an instrument of inclusion and efficiency.
He thanked Ghanaians for their trust in NIA and called for a renewed commitment with vigour, integrity and purpose.
