Accra, October 27, 2025 – The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, is to announce a critical national initiative aimed at reducing the proliferation of illicit arms in the country. As part of this effort, the Ministry will launch a Gun Amnesty on November 11, 2025, which will run for a period of six (6) weeks.
This initiative aims to provide a safe and voluntary opportunity for citizens to surrender unregistered or illicitly held firearms without fear of prosecution. The Gun Amnesty is complemented by a ban on the use of arms during traditional festivities and restrictions on the importation and sale of arms.
The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce the number of illicit arms in circulation, enhance public safety, national security, and social cohesion. The Ministry believe that this initiative will help to create a safer and more secure environment for all Ghanaians.
As part of measures to ensure a successful implementation of the initiative, the Ministry is engaging with key stakeholders, including Regional Ministers, traditional authorities and community stakeholders for sensitisation and to mobilize public support. The Ministry urges all citizens who possess unregistered or illicitly held firearms to take advantage of this amnesty and surrender their arms.
The Ministry of the Interior is committed to working together to keep Ghana safe and free from gun-related violence. The Ministry is therefore appealing to all Ghanaians to support this initiative and join us in our efforts to build a more secure and prosperous society.
Further details on the Gun Amnesty and other measures will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Ministry of the Interior is committed to ensuring internal security and, maintenance of law and order in the country.
Signed
MUNTAKA MOHAMMED-MUBARAK (MP)
