The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Muhammad-Mubarak, has urged the people of Zongo communities to refrain from using illegal drugs, warning that it can destroy their lives and render them ineligible to benefit from government programmes.
Speaking during an engagement with Zongo Chiefs and Muslim opinion leaders at Abossey Okai New Zongo in Accra, Hon. Muntaka emphasized that law enforcement agencies will crack down on individuals using illegal drugs, regardless of their social status or affiliations.
The Minister highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse, which can lead to the destruction of lives and hinder individuals from benefiting from government initiatives.
He warned that the law will catch up with anyone found using illegal drugs, emphasizing that no one will be spared.
He called on Chiefs, Imams, and opinion leaders to stand against drug use in their communities and question individuals who suddenly become wealthy and expose those involved in wrongdoing.
The Minister emphasized the importance of community members taking responsibility for their actions and not taking the law into their own hands, instead handing over individuals involved in wrongdoing to the appropriate authorities.
Hon. Muntaka appealed to the youth in Zongo communities to support government initiatives and avoid drug use, which can destroy their lives and futures. He emphasized that as a predominantly Muslim community, they should fear Allah and not allow a few individuals to destroy their society.
The Chief of Zongo in Accra, Alhaji Yaaya Amisu Baako, thanked the Minister for the engagement and assured that the Chiefs, Imams, and opinion leaders in the community will help the government to address issues bothering Zongo communities.
The Minister’s message serves as a call to action for Zongo communities to prioritize their well-being and work together to create a safer and more prosperous environment.
