Delivering the keynote address at the launch of the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) 20th celebration, Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak called for a balanced and humane approach to migration governance, emphasising the need to harmonise national security imperatives with the human dimensions of migration. The celebration is to commemorate 20 years of research, policy engagement and leadership in migration studies under the theme, “The Realities of Free Movement in Africa: Governance Norms and Social Transformation.”

The Minister acknowledged that CMS’s extensive body of research on migration has significantly enhanced his understanding of the human aspects of migration, particularly within the context of national security and internal governance.

Hon. Muntaka further highlighted the importance of a national development framework in which focused research centres such as CMS serve as vital links between knowledge generation and policy action. He noted that the Centre’s work has contributed to positioning Ghana as a leading hub for migration research in Africa and expressed his appreciation for CMS’s sustained contribution to national and regional policy discourse.

In her remarks, the Director of the Centre for Migration Studies, Professor Mary Biatekmaa Setrana, provided a brief account of her academic and professional journey, highlighting strategic efforts undertaken to expand postgraduate enrolment, strengthen research output and enhance the Centre’s relevance to policy and practice. She reaffirmed CMS’s commitment to advancing rigorous, policy-relevant research on migration and mobility in Africa.

The Launch was also graced by the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as Chairperson of the programme, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as staff of the University of Ghana.
