The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to conduct peaceful and credible elections in December 2024.
Mr Leonardo who paid a courtesy call on the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey in his office in Accra, commended Ghana’s competent institutions, hailing the country as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
He reiterated the UN’s continuous support to Ghana through various agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.
Hon. Henry Quartey assured the delegation that the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has formed an election task force to ensure peace before, during, and after the elections. He emphasised the task force’s engagement with various stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
The Hon. Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to ensuring internal security, maintaining law and order, and conducting peaceful elections. He assured the delegation that all necessary protocols were being put in place to ensure peace and security in the country.
The meeting demonstrates the international community’s confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions and its commitment to supporting the country in consolidating its democratic gains.
