The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA).

In his remarks, the Minister highlighted the urgent need for action, citing a troubling surge in gun-related incidents, particularly during traditional celebrations, funerals, and social gatherings, which have led to unnecessary loss of life. “These disturbing occurrences point to a dangerous trend which amplifies the increasing availability and misuse of small arms in our society,” he stated.

Hon. Muntaka reiterated the need for deeper collaboration with civil society, traditional leaders, the media, and the youth, particularly in border and conflict-prone areas, to promote education and inclusion as key strategies for preventing gun violence.

The Minister also called on the new Board to enhance research and data collection to better understand the trends and networks driving the illicit arms trade in Ghana. He urged them to bring their expertise and dedication to bear on the Commission’s work, emphasizing the need for deep-rooted patriotism and a sense of duty to safeguard the nation’s peace and security.

The Chairman of the Board, Hon. Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, in his remarks emphasized the Board’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders, engaging with relevant parties, and shaping policy direction to address the challenges of small arms proliferation.

Hon. Dorgbadzi-Dorani called on all stakeholders to support the Board’s efforts in promoting peace and security in Ghana.
