Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has tasked the new Ghana Prisons Service Council to drive transformation across Ghana’s prisons to align with Government’s commitment to rehabilitating and reforming prisons across the country.
In his address, the Minister emphasised the Council’s critical role in driving modernisation efforts within the Ghana Prisons Service. He highlighted the Service’s strategic direction, which focuses on key areas such as staff and inmate welfare, agricultural expansion and mechanization, development of industries and an industrial hub, digitalization, wealth creation, and strategic partnerships for sustainability.
Hon. Muntaka urged the Council members to leverage their expertise to provide strategic oversight, increase advocacy, and engage stakeholders to support prison reforms. He urged them to monitor and evaluate policy implementation, ensure accountability in all transactions, and champion bold, innovative, and compassionate leadership.
The Chairman of the Council, Apostle (Ing) Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, expressed the members deep sense of duty to serve and called for urgent action to address pressing challenges in the prison system. “The prison system should mirror our society and become centres for transformation and reformation,” he said.
Apostle Kumi-Larbi outlined the Council’s immediate priorities, including decongesting prisons and improving conditions for prisoners to promote rehabilitation and reintegration.
