At the inauguration of the Ghana National Fire Service new Governing Council in Accra, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior called for the Council to initiate and lead a comprehensive review of the Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537), to realign the legal framework of the Service with current realities and emerging global standards and threats.

The Minister stressed that the Council’s work must reflect the Service’s expanded mandate, which goes beyond firefighting to include multi-hazard emergency response, rescue operations, fire prevention, public education, hazardous material response, and disaster mitigation.

Hon. Muntaka reaffirmed the Ministry’s unwavering support to the Council and the GNFS, pledging to work with them to ensure that the Service is resourced, modernized, and guided by sound policy and ethical leadership.

He congratulated the Council members on their appointment, trusting that they will bring their expertise, integrity, and commitment to bear in all that they do.

The Chairman of the Council, Nana Ofori Ahenkan II, also emphasised the importance of the Council’s role in shaping the future of the GNFS.

Nana Ofori Ahenkan II added that the Council will promote a culture of accountability and transparency while ensuring that the Service achieves its mandate.
