In a heartwarming display of solidarity and compassion, 11 agencies under the Ministry of the Interior together with the Minister and the Deputy Minister have collectively donated GH¢1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares at a short ceremony at Jubilee House  in Accra.

The Minister of the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who led the team for the donation, explained that the donation was a gesture of goodwill, as sickness knows no boundaries and can affect anyone.

H.E. President John Dramani Mahama expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of the Interior and its Agencies for their support, emphasizing that the initiative is rooted in compassion, equity, and shared national responsibility.

The President disclosed that Cabinet has approved the Bill for the Fund and once approved by Parliament, an independent trustee will be appointed to oversee the Fund for transparent and efficient management. He also added that awareness creation will also be conducted to sensitize the public on the dangers of non-communicable diseases and their prevention.

President Mahama also disclosed that Cabinet has approved 1 billion Ghana Cedis to retool the security services to perform their duties well effectively and efficiently.

On his part, the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh thanked the Minister of the Interior and his team for the gesture and said Mahatma care is another innovation to support health care on non-communicable diseases in the country.

The objective of the Mahama Cares programme is designed to support specialist-level treatment for a wide range of chronic illnesses, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke. The fund will augment the National Health Insurance and take care of non-communicable diseases not covered by the Health Insurance.
