In a strong statement during the inauguration of the Sabon Zongo Neighborhood Watch Committee of Zongo Against Drugs and for Development in Accra, the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terkabi has warned that those who indulge in drugs will face the full force of the law, and called upon all stakeholders to join forces in the fight against drugs.

He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling the menace of drug abuse in Ghanaian communities and warned that anybody found guilty will be
Prosecuted.

Hon. Ebenezer Terlabi emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to address the complex issue of drug abuse, citing the devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities.

According to the Narcotics Control Commission, the most commonly abused drugs in Ghana are cannabis, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, with 60% of drug users between the ages of 15-35, he added.

The Hon. Deputy Minister noted that the government, through the Ministry of the Interior and the Narcotics Control Commission, is committed to strengthening law enforcement, implementing public education campaigns, and providing support for rehabilitation and reintegration of those affected by drug abuse.

He stated that the inauguration of the Sabon Zongo Neighborhood Watch Committee is a significant step towards empowering communities to take ownership of the fight against drug abuse. The Deputy Minister commended the Chiefs, Imams and opinion leaders for supporting the Committee and charged the committee members to work diligently in the service of their community, upholding the principles of integrity, accountability, and service.

As the government and communities come together to tackle the scourge of drug abuse, the Deputy Minister’s call to action serves as a rallying cry for all Ghanaians to join the fight. ‘Together, we can create a society that is free from the bane of drugs and where our youth can thrive and reach their full potential’, he said.
