In a significant step towards addressing Africa’s migration challenges, senior officials from across the continent gathered in Accra, Ghana, to validate a Plan of Action for implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration.

The two-day meeting, opened by Mrs. Doreen Annan, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, on behalf of Hon. Henry Quartey, Minister for the Interior of Ghana, brought together representatives from African Union member states, international organisations, and civil society to finalise the continent’s plan of action.

Mrs. Doreen Annan highlighted Ghana’s commitment to working with the African Union to ensure the meaningful implementation of the Global Compact, citing initiatives such as the National Migration Policy, National Labour Migration Policy, and Diaspora Engagement Policy.

The meeting aims to forge partnerships and coordinate efforts to address migration’s multi-dimensional challenges, including climate change, conflicts, and violent extremism.

With the Global Compact presenting a crucial framework for effective migration management, this gathering marks a significant milestone towards ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration in Africa.

In a statement read on behalf of the Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Special Liaison Office to the African Union Commission, Ms Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, Chief of Mission of IOM in Ghana, commended Ghana for implementing the Global Compact for Migration.  She welcomed all participants and noted that the workshop is an important step towards achieving the Global Compact for Migration in Africa and wished them a fruitful workshop.
