His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service that government stands firmly behind efforts to retool and modernize the Service.

The pledge came during a courtesy call at Jubilee House by the Council, led by Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. The meeting was to formally introduce Council members, brief the President on governance reforms, and seek his guidance.

President Mahama praised GIS as “the first point of entry into Ghana” and “a symbol of our complete sovereignty.” He commended the Council’s innovation in launching Project SECOBOR, )Secure Our Borders), an initiative to mobilize public and private partnerships to strengthen border security despite limited state resources.

“I assure you of government’s support to resolve your logistical challenges. We are working hard to improve your working conditions so you can deliver on your mandate,” the President said.

Hon. Muntaka outlined ongoing reforms under government policy, revealing that seven new Regional Immigration Offices are under construction nationwide to bring services closer to citizens and tighten border management.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to policy leadership, resource mobilization, and stronger institutional frameworks for GIS.

Council Chairman Rev. Stephen Wengam appealed for presidential backing for SECOBOR, which seeks to boost GIS capacity through partnerships.

The President congratulated both the Minister and Council for their “good work” and pledged continued support to ensure GIS performs its duties effectively.
