At a Flag-Raising Ceremony to Cmmemorate Commonwealth Day in Accra, Hon. Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, underscored the need for unity and cooperation among Commonwealth nations to unlock opportunities for a prosperous future.

Speaking on the theme ‘Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth’, Hon. Muntaka highlighted Ghana’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting human rights, empowering youth and advancing sustainable development.

“We must work together to create jobs, protect the vulnerable, empower women and youth, invest in sustainable development and advance just economic systems,” he urged.

The Minister also acknowledged the historical injustices faced by many Commonwealth countries and called for ongoing global conversations on reparative justice to promote restoration, equity and shared prosperity.

Ghana’s efforts to address climate change, promote digital transformation and empower youth were also highlighted as key priorities.

In his statement, Dr. John Obeng Apea, who represented the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, H.E. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, noted that Ghana, one of the key Commonwealth countries, is a business hub and a symbol of unity among the 56 member countries.

He emphasized the importance of the Commonwealth in today’s changing world, saying, “The world is changing, and the Commonwealth is strategic for partnership. We need this time to champion the cause of the Commonwealth and renew our ties despite the challenging times.”

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Christian Rogg, on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, noted that it is important to come together and work together amid challenges across the world and that it is their shared responsibility to ensure that things work for their people.

The event was attended by government officials, diplomats and students, and marked a moment of reflection and renewed purpose in the pursuit of a more just and equitable world.

The Commonwealth Day celebration serves as a reminder that nation-building and international engagement are complementary paths to advancing prosperity and upholding shared values.
