The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a Health and Safety Fund in Accra to support firefighters who sustain severe injuries in the line of duty and to cater for the education of the children of firefighters who lose their lives while serving the nation.
The fund was launched during the commemoration of International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD), a day set aside to honour the bravery and dedication of firefighters in the country. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Appreciating Our Heroes: Say No to Firefighter Assault and Firefighting Truck Vandalism,” The event was marked with a ceremony honouring the bravery and dedication of firefighters in the country.
Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, in his address, highlighted the challenges faced by firefighters, including obsolete tools and inadequate resources, and assured that the government is committed to retooling and modernizing the GNFS.
Hon. Muntaka condemned attacks on firefighters and vandalism of firefighting equipment, and called on civil society, religious leaders, and community groups to speak out against such acts. He commended the GNFS for their commitment to national safety and strategic leadership.
The Hon. Minister also urged all individuals, institutions, and partners to support the GNFS in equipping the Service and to consistently support the Fund each year to ensure it remains fit for purpose and fully resourced.
Ag. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Daniella Ntow Sapong, in her remarks, highlighted the challenges faced by the GNFS, including inadequate resources and equipment. She, however, expressed delight in the Service’s achievements and commitment to protecting lives and properties.
Ag. CFO Ntow Sapong also thanked the Minister for his support and commitment to improving the GNFS.
The launch of the Health and Safety Fund is a significant step towards supporting the welfare of firefighters and their families. The event included the presentation of awards to firefighters who have distinguished themselves in their service.
